The coast and its seals

The National Trust cares for this stretch of the Yorkshire Coast. Grey and common seals use the shore below Ravenscar. The National Park wildlife guide describes common seal pups in June and July and grey seal pups in November. Binoculars allow observation without approaching the animals.

Watching responsibly

Watching is from the clifftop. The path from Ravenscar golf course to the beach is closed by a landslip, and there is no way up the cliff for anyone walking along the beach from Robin Hood's Bay or Boggle Hole. Do not descend closed paths or plan a shore approach to the colony. Its seal guidance asks visitors to keep their distance and never approach or move a seal. Dogs can alarm seals; leave them at home where possible, or use a short lead and stay well away.

Parking and facilities

The National Trust gives free roadside parking at Ravenscar, YO13 0NE, grid reference NZ 980 016. The National Trust visitor centre and tea room at Ravenscar have closed permanently. Public toilets are across the road.

Paths and access

Clifftop paths are rough and exposed. Observe closure signs and keep clear of cliff edges. No National Trust guidance recommending a low-tide shore path was confirmed, so this guide does not give that advice.
