The Yorkshire coast
The Moors run right down to the sea, and some of England's finest coastline is within an easy drive — the abbey town of Whitby, the classic resort of Scarborough, and the cobbled smugglers' village of Robin Hood's Bay all sit under an hour from the southern villages.

Whitby
Whitby is pure atmosphere: a working harbour beneath the clifftop ruins of Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, the 199 steps up to St Mary's church, Captain Cook's story, black-jet jewellery, and some of the best fish and chips anywhere. You can even arrive by steam on the railway.
Scarborough
Scarborough, England's original seaside resort, spreads across two great bays split by a headland castle, with sandy beaches, a spa, the Rotunda museum and old-fashioned seaside fun — an easy family day out.
Robin Hood's Bay
Tumbling down a cliff in a maze of narrow cobbled alleys, Robin Hood's Bay is a former fishing and smuggling village, now loved for its rock pools, the fossils of the "Dinosaur Coast", and its place at the end of the Coast to Coast walk. Making a few days of it? See where to stay.
