A weekend in the North York Moors

The shape of the weekend

Day 1 stays around the forest and southern villages. Day 2 follows the A169 to Whitby and then Robin Hood's Bay, without a detour west to Sutton Bank. Day 3 stays with Hutton-le-Hole, Rosedale and Pickering. Each day has a 45-minute buffer and finishes before 5pm, including the return to Pickering. In summer, keep the same plan or extend the final stop, finishing by 6pm.

Pickering is the starting point, not an extra stop. If you stay in another base village, check the extra road distance. Reserve lunch where possible. Stop times below include getting from the car park to the destination.

Day 1, Saturday: forest and southern villages

Parking

Dalby Forest: Up to 1hr £3.50, up to 2hrs £6.50, up to 3hrs £9.50, up to 4hrs £12.50, over 4hrs £15; minibus £25, coach £35. Thornton-le-Dale Maltongate: £3.10 up to 1hr, £3.90 1 to 2hrs, £6.20 over 2hrs, coach £7.50. See the parking guide for payment and vehicle rules.

Shorter version

Two stops: Dalby 9.30am to 11.30am, then the Grapes at noon. Return after lunch, keeping the buffer.

Wet weather swap

Replace the forest outing with a short look around Pickering's parish church and town, subject to church access. Keep lunch at the Grapes; shorten the beck stop if surfaces are slippery.

Check before travelling: the pub's own site had no recent dated information when checked in September 2026.

A heritage railway ride should replace the forest and village outing, not be added after them. Standard 2026 trains are seasonal. Early November has no confirmed final day here. Winter 2026 to 2027 and later seasons are not confirmed; use an alternative and check the current timetable. A full Pickering to Whitby return takes most of a day; keep lunch and sightseeing within the chosen timetable.

Day 2, Sunday: the moor and coast

Parking

Saltergate: £3.90 up to 2 hours, £6.20 over 2 hours, coach £7.50. Whitby Marina Back: 2hrs minimum £4.90, 4hrs £8.10, 6hrs £10.20, 24hrs £13.10. Robin Hood's Bay Station: 1hr £3.20, 2hrs £4.90, 4hrs £6.40, 6hrs £7.30, 24hrs £8.70 (9am to 6pm, 1 March to 31 October; free outside the season). Whitby Park and Ride is in its published season today; check the last bus before using it.

Shorter version

Two stops: Whitby harbour and lunch in Robin Hood's Bay, omitting Saltergate. Leave the Bay after lunch and retain the buffer. For less driving still, stay in Whitby and confirm a local lunch venue.

Wet weather swap

Omit the exposed viewpoint. Spend the morning in Whitby with an indoor attraction only if its opening is confirmed. Keep lunch in the Bay, but omit the lower-village stroll if the bank is slippery.

Day 3, optional Monday: villages, lunch and Pickering

Parking

Hutton-le-Hole: £4.65 up to 3hrs, £6.20 longer. The museum has no car park. Pub parking is not confirmed; ask before travelling. Pickering Eastgate: 1hr £2.50, 2hrs £3.70, 3hrs £4.40, 6hrs £7.30, 24hrs £8.70.

Shorter version

Two stops: museum from 10am, then the Coach House for noon lunch. Return to Pickering after lunch with the buffer.

Wet weather swap

The museum combines buildings and open ground; it is not wholly indoors. Replace it with Pickering church and town, checking church access. Leave in time for noon lunch at the Coach House.

Winter alternative

Do not plan the closed museum. Use Pickering church and town from 10am to 11.15am, then allow about 25 minutes by car to the Coach House for noon lunch. Allow about 25 minutes back and retain the 45-minute buffer. Avoid Rosedale in ice or snow; confirm road conditions and lunch, or stay in Pickering and bring food if no suitable lunch is confirmed.

A two-stop car-free day

Use the Coastliner 840 for Pickering and Goathland rather than copying the driving day. Aim to reach Goathland in the morning, allow 90 minutes around the village, then return to Pickering for lunch and 90 minutes in town. These are visit allowances, not advertised bus departures: choose the outward and return journeys from the current timetable first, leave a 45-minute connection buffer and confirm a lunch venue's hours. Bring food if none is confirmed. Sunday buses are infrequent.

The Esk Valley line offers a different two-stop day from Whitby to Danby, allowing the walk from the station and checking the return train before leaving. Danby Lodge has exhibitions, riverside grounds and family activities. The cafe is In the Wilde. Only assistance dogs are allowed in the buildings and Crow Wood. Winter opening is daily 10.30am to 4pm from 2 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, excluding 24 and 25 December, then weekends only to 7 February. Do not rely on NYMR as the return connection outside a confirmed service.

Road distances, daylight and changes

These are OpenStreetMap/OSRM road-route estimates checked 17 October 2026, not journeys recorded on the ground. I have allowed an average 30mph plus five minutes per leg and rounded up to five minutes. This is a planning allowance, not a promised speed or a live traffic forecast. Forest Drive direction, road closures and traffic can change the route. Robin Hood's Bay is routed to the upper car park, not the restricted lower village.

Winter walks should finish before dusk even when the return drive ends before 5pm. Check daylight, road conditions and weather. On icy moor roads, choose the shorter town day instead. Parking amounts come from the shared parking guide and may change at the machines.
