How we check facts
By Jon Cosson · Updated 1 November 2026 · Checked
I am Jon Cosson, the writer and editor of Yorkshire Moors. This is how I check visitor information, mark uncertainty and record corrections.
Sources, in order
I start with the organisation responsible for the detail: the operator for opening times and access, the council or car park operator for parking, and the transport operator for services. For National Park boundaries and park guidance I use the National Park Authority and official mapping. Safety advice comes from the relevant public authority or emergency service.
For history I use primary records and established heritage organisations where available, then reliable published research. A second independent source is useful where one is available. Search snippets, undated directories and other guides are not enough to establish a changing visitor fact. Where sources conflict, I keep the qualification visible rather than choose the more convenient answer.
What Checked and Updated mean
Checked is the date of a recorded check against the sources. It is not a visit date and it does not promise that every detail remains unchanged. Some records have only a check month; I retain that precision rather than invent a day. A scoped check applies to the details named in its source note.
Updated records a significant change to the page. Its structured dateModified and sitemap lastmod use the same page-specific date record. A layout change or a new build does not establish a new fact-check date. Pages without an evidenced source check do not receive an invented Checked date.
What Unconfirmed means
Unconfirmed means the available sources do not establish the detail. It does not mean yes or no. Plan My Day leaves an unconfirmed requirement out of matching results. Partial access is not treated as fully step-free, and dogs in a bar do not establish permission in bedrooms.
First-hand observations and photographs
First-hand material I supply is marked as an Author's note with “Observed by Jon Cosson” and the month and year. It records an observation, not a guarantee about a future visit. Source-based guide text is not presented as a visit I made. A “Photo by the author” credit is used only where my ownership has been confirmed.
Independent and non-commercial
No business pays to be listed. I carry no paid listings, sponsored content or affiliate links. External links are ordinary links and this guide earns nothing from a booking. The guide is independent of the National Park Authority and the operators it describes.
Corrections are public
Send factual corrections through the contact page. Material reader-visible corrections are recorded in the public corrections log, with the page, date and what changed. The changelog also records additions and wider changes.
Sources for this policy
This policy documents the guide's existing checking and independence rules, the source and check fields in Plan My Day, and the page-date records. It is an editorial statement by Jon Cosson, not a claim of independent certification.
