Goathland

Goathland is the North York Moors' most famous village, and its most filmed. Its steam-railway station stood in for Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter film, and the village itself played Aidensfield in ITV's Heartbeat. Beyond the screen magic, Goathland is a gorgeous moorland village of stone cottages, free-roaming sheep, and the 70-foot Mallyan Spout waterfall on its doorstep.

Goathland station, Harry Potter's Hogsmeade

Goathland station doubled as Hogsmeade, where the Hogwarts Express pulls in, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Steam trains still puff through daily in season, so you can watch them arrive from the footbridge (a favourite photo spot) and browse Harry Potter souvenirs at the station shop. The 1922 goods-shed tea room, with seating in old railway wagons, adds to the time-travelled feel.

Goathland as Heartbeat's Aidensfield

For a different vintage, Goathland was Aidensfield, the 1960s village at the heart of ITV's long-running Heartbeat. Fans will recognise the Aidensfield Arms (the village pub), the Aidensfield Stores and Scripps Garage. Many shopfronts still play up the nostalgic look.

Beyond the fame, Goathland is simply a lovely place: stone cottages spread along wide green verges where black-faced sheep graze freely, a Duchy of Lancaster common right going back centuries, with open heather moorland all around. There are cafés, shops and pubs, plus the country-house Mallyan Spout Hotel.

A woodland path near the Mallyan Spout Hotel leads to Mallyan Spout, at 70 feet the tallest waterfall in the North York Moors. For a classic outing, walk the signposted 3.5-mile Rail Trail down the old line to Grosmont and ride the steam railway back, or carry on to the tiny hamlet of Beck Hole and the riverside Birch Hall Inn, one of Yorkshire's smallest pubs.

Getting there

Goathland sits on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Pickering and Whitby, so the loveliest arrival is by steam. By car it's off the A169 moor road; the village and its verges get busy in season, so park considerately and mind the sheep. Looking for a base? See where to stay.
