Goathland
Few small villages are as familiar as Goathland, even to people who've never been. Sitting high on the moors with sheep grazing its open greens, it's a household name from television and film — and a lovely place in its own right.

A village off the screen
Goathland is the "Aidensfield" of the long-running ITV series Heartbeat, and its railway station famously became Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter film — the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway still call there. Fans come to recognise the spots; everyone else comes for the moorland setting.
Mallyan Spout
A short walk from the village drops into a wooded gorge to Mallyan Spout, the tallest waterfall in the North York Moors. (See our Mallyan Spout walk.)
On the moor
