Whitby
The Whitby Christmas Festival runs from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November at the Marina Front car park on Langborne Road, with traders in sheds, beach huts and gazebos, food and drink, live music and a fireworks display. The festival takes over the Marina Front car park, so park at Marina Back (2hrs minimum £4.90, 4hrs £8.10, 6hrs £10.20, 24hrs £13.10) or Endeavour Wharf instead; our parking guide has the rest, and the Whitby buses guide covers arriving without a car.
York
York's St Nicholas Fair runs from 12 November to 21 December on Parliament Street and is closed on Tuesdays this year. It is the biggest Christmas market within reach of the moors, and the busiest; weekdays are the quieter bet.
Castle Howard
Castle Howard's Christmas show this year is A Dickens of a Christmas, from 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: Dickens' novels staged through the house with projection and sound. House tickets run from £24 plus a booking fee and popular dates sell out, so book ahead.
Malton
Malton, the food town, does Christmas twice. The St Clement's Festival is Saturday 21 November in the Market Place, free, 10am to 6pm. The Christmas Festival follows on 5 and 6 December, listed by Yorkshire Food Guide; last year it ran 9am to 3pm with artisan, farmers and street markets, a funfair, bands and Father Christmas. Check Visit Malton before you travel. Parking: Market Place car park (Free for up to two hours).
Pickering
Pickering's Christmas lights switch-on is Saturday 28 November, 2pm to 6pm in the Market Place, confirmed by Pickering Town Council; the programme is to follow, and last year the lights went on at 4.15pm. The separate Christmas Festival at Galtres Pickering Showground has not announced a 2026 date; last year it ran on Saturday 6 December, 12pm to 8pm, with artisan stalls, fairground rides and Santa. Parking: the Ropery (Up to 1hr £2.40, up to 2hrs £3.80), Vivis Lane (As Eastgate: 1hr £2.50, 2hrs £3.70, 3hrs £4.40, 6hrs £7.30, 24hrs £8.70) and Eastgate are all a short walk from the Market Place.
Thornton-le-Dale
The village lights switch-on is Saturday 5 December, 4.30pm to 8.30pm at the Village Hall, with Santa, music, mulled wine, food and stalls; last year's evening was free, and the stalls and donations pay for the 4,000 lamps. Our sister site has the full Christmas in Thornton-le-Dale guide. Parking: Maltongate car park (£3.10 up to 1hr, £3.90 1 to 2hrs, £6.20 over 2hrs, coach £7.50).
Helmsley
The Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church has not announced its 2026 dates; in past years it has been free with donations, open 10am to 4pm, with trees decorated by local groups. Parking: Market Place car park (Up to 1hr £2.50, up to 2hrs £3.80; 20 minutes free in marked bays).
Scarborough
Scarborough Sparkle at the Open Air Theatre is listed for 27 November to 29 December by Yorkshire Food Guide, though the organiser has not confirmed it, so treat the dates as provisional until they do.
Nunnington Hall and Ryedale Folk Museum
Nunnington Hall's Nature's Noel, twenty trees decorated by local groups with natural and recycled decorations, runs Thursday to Sunday from 19 November to 20 December, with festive evenings on 5 and 12 December and a bookable Father Christmas; National Trust members go free. Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole has a Christmas shopping weekend on 28 and 29 November and then closes until March.
Which market is best for what
The biggest is York's St Nicholas Fair, weeks of stalls in the middle of the city. The best by the sea is Whitby's festival, with the harbour and the abbey behind it. For food, Malton's pair of festivals are the ones, in the town that bills itself as Yorkshire's food capital. For free and local, the village switch-ons at Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale are the evenings where the whole place turns out.
