Natural England's National Nature Reserve listing describes Forge Valley as ancient woodland beside the River Derwent. It records breeding woodland birds, otter, brown trout and crayfish. The National Park guide highlights woodland flowers and autumn fungi; these are habitats to observe quietly, not a promise of sightings.

Parking and access

Roadside car parks lie along the valley road between West Ayton and Hackness. A current official named parking location and grid reference could not be confirmed during the October check. The National Park Authority reports a temporary footpath closure on the southern section from Old Man's Mouth car park. Nothing official says the whole boardwalk is closed; check the notice before setting out.

Dogs and visiting etiquette

Keep dogs under control and away from wildlife and river margins. A reserve-specific current dog policy and a fixed birdwatching month range were not confirmed. Follow signs and the official notice before setting out.
