The Whitby to Sandsend walk has a beach option when tides allow and a cliff alternative that climbs out of Whitby and drops towards Sandsend. The existing route notes give about 6 miles there and back, depending on the start and chosen line.

The route in outline
Head west out of Whitby and you have two lines to choose from: the beach at low tide, or the Cleveland Way along the cliff. The tide matters
Walkers have been cut off below the West Cliff, so check the tide before walking the sand. See tide prediction services and official coastal safety advice.
The beach route works at low tide. Check the tide times before you set off and give yourself room at both ends, because a rising tide against the cliffs is not the place to be improvising. If the tide is wrong, the cliff path is there and the walk is just as good.
Walking it with a dog
The council restriction excludes dogs from the designated Sandsend beach area from 1 May to 30 September. Follow beach signs and the council map, rather than assuming the whole shore is unrestricted. More on dogs across the park in our dog-friendly guide.
At Sandsend
The Hart Inn is listed at Sandsend. Sunday 11am to 5.30pm only, which is unusually early. Sandsend parking is roadside along the sea wall and fills by mid-morning in summer. Check before travelling: the pub's own site had no recent dated information when checked in September 2026.
Sandsend council car park is on Lythe Bank, YO21 3TG. Its seasonal tariff applies from 1 March to 31 October, 9am to 6pm. Visit North Yorkshire lists Sandsend North and South toilets: 8am to 9pm, 1 April to 31 October; 8am to 6pm, 1 November to 31 March.
Making a day of it
Allow time for the climbing cliff alternative as well as the return. Pair it with the harbour, the abbey and the rest of Whitby, or save your legs for the longer cliff walk south to Robin Hood's Bay another day.
