Whitby Beach

By Jon Cosson · Updated 29 October 2026 · Checked 29 October 2026

Whitby beach is the long sweep of sand below the West Cliff, running from the West Pier towards Sandsend, with a smaller harbour beach, Tate Hill Sands, on the east side of the river. This is the practical version, checked against the council, the RNLI and the Environment Agency in October 2026.

West Cliff, Tate Hill and the walk to Sandsend

West Cliff beach and the beach huts. This is the main beach, sometimes called Whitby Sands, starting by the West Pier with the row of council beach chalets under the cliff. The council lists a café, toilets, a first aid point, a lost child centre and a slipway, plus deckchairs, windbreaks, a paddling pool and donkey rides in season. On the cliff top, the Whitby Pavilion café opens 10am to 4pm daily, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The chalets are hired from North Yorkshire Council by the day, week, season or year; the council says 2027 bookings open in February. The two council car parks closest to the beach are West Cliff car park on Pavilion Drive (YO21 3EG, 439 spaces including 4 disabled bays) and Pavilion Top on North Terrace (YO21 3EN, 63 spaces). Charges apply 9am to 6pm from 1 March to 31 October only, so from 1 November to the end of February the council lists no charges. More in our parking guide (/plan/parking).

Getting down without the cliff lift. The lift has been closed since 2022 because of corrosion. In March 2026 the council postponed a plan to decommission it and backed a study of repair costs, so its future is open, but it is not running. The National Park's access guide says a slope suitable for wheelchairs leads to the beach, though some mobility equipment struggles on the sand. Whitby Disability Action Group has two all terrain beach wheelchairs. The zigzag cliff paths are not suitable for everyone. The other way down is from the harbour end: the Khyber Pass road drops from the West Cliff to Pier Road, and the beach starts by the West Pier.

Tate Hill Sands, the harbour beach. Tate Hill Sands is the small beach inside the harbour on the east side, by the East Pier. The council says dogs are allowed here all year; the 2025 dog control order removed the old seasonal rule, though fouling rules still apply. English Heritage notes that the real Russian ship Dmitry ran aground on Tate Hill Sands a few years before Bram Stoker's 1890 visit.

Walking on to Sandsend. At low tide you can walk the sand all the way to Sandsend, about three miles and roughly an hour. Walkers have been cut off below the West Cliff, so start on a falling tide. If you find fossils, look in loose beach material, take only a few, and never hammer the cliff or bedrock.
