A whole holiday

7-Day North York Moors Itinerary: Car-Free

By Jon Cosson · Updated 1 November 2026 · Checked

Park boundary status unconfirmed

I keep these holiday days to one area at a time, with an overnight base, a wet-weather alternative and the travel checked separately from the attraction. Choose dates and opening first: this is a suggested sequence, not a booked connection or a promise that every venue is open.

Allow a 45-minute buffer for transfers and a slower day. Aim to finish outings by about 5pm in winter or 6pm in summer. Do not add a distant attraction to fill a gap.

Day 1: Pickering arrival

Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed
Morning
Explore Market Place and the independent shops, traditional butchers and bakeries; keep arrival local. Morning place guide
Lunch
Use a Pickering café or bakery, checking chosen opening.
Afternoon
Visit Pickering Castle only if its date-specific opening is confirmed; otherwise continue the town exploration rather than add distant travel. Afternoon place guide
Travel
Malton to Pickering on Coastliner 840; check selected stops and the current timetable.
Seasonal limits
Choose the selected 840 journey; combined 840/843 displays do not mean every departure reaches Whitby.
If it does not work
If your arrival misses a useful bus, shorten the Pickering afternoon rather than add another transfer.
Rainy-day swap
Pickering parish church if open, then shops and a cafe; keep the arrival local rather than use an outdoor castle in heavy rain.
Dogs
Lead dogs on roads; check indoor cafe, castle and bedroom policies separately.
Accessibility
Town pavements and individual shop entrances need checking. The castle is not a universal step-free afternoon.

Day 2: Whitby; heritage railway optional

Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed
Morning
Transfer to Whitby. Heritage train only on a published running date and a departure actually reaching Whitby; in November after 1st use a selected through 840 instead. Morning place guide
Lunch
Whitby fish-and-chips café or takeaway; specific opening not established.
Afternoon
Explore harbour, Swing Bridge and independent shops. The 199 steps/Abbey viewpoint are optional for those comfortable with steps, not a step-free core. Afternoon place guide
Travel
NYMR Pickering towards Whitby only on confirmed running days. Off-season use a selected Coastliner 840 direct to Whitby; a Goathland stop requires a later confirmed bus.
Seasonal limits
The published NYMR ordinary season ends 1 November 2026. No everyday November railway transfer after that date is promised.
If it does not work
Use a selected through Coastliner 840 to Whitby. A Goathland stop is optional only when a later bus to Whitby is confirmed; otherwise go direct.
Rainy-day swap
Whitby Museum on a confirmed opening day. It is closed Mondays; use shops and an indoor lunch that day instead.
Dogs
Check museum pet-dog policy and railway carriage conditions; no dog-friendly indoor swap is promised.
Accessibility
Saltergate's viewing platform is separate from the Horcum circuit. In Whitby, omit the 199 steps if unsuitable; check the museum's accessible entrance.

Day 3: Robin Hood’s Bay village

Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed
Morning
Start in upper village and descend the steep street only if everyone can climb back; explore lanes rather than promise a coastal through-walk. Morning place guide
Lunch
Choose from the officially evidenced cafés/restaurants; confirm specific opening.
Afternoon
Continue village exploration and return uphill before the selected return bus. Beach activity is not part of the unconditional plan. Afternoon place guide
Travel
Arriva X93/X94 Whitby to upper Robin Hood's Bay Thorpe Lane and return. Choose the actual return first.
Seasonal limits
Select the dated Arriva X93/X94 outward and return. Winter operation differs; no copied frequency or departure time is supplied.
If it does not work
Stay in Whitby if the actual bus return or boarding arrangements do not work.
Rainy-day swap
Replace the Bay descent with a Whitby Museum day when open; on Monday stay with town shops and indoor food.
Dogs
Lead dogs near cliff edges and village traffic; confirm bus carriage and chosen food venue.
Accessibility
Thorpe Lane is in the upper village. Lower Bay has a steep bank; remain above it if descending and climbing back is unsuitable.

Day 4: Grosmont railway village

Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed
Morning
From Whitby take a dated Northern Esk Valley service to Grosmont. Explore the junction village; NYMR operation is optional, not assumed. Morning place guide
Lunch
Station refreshment room only if open; otherwise bring food. Do not present seasonal railway catering as guaranteed in November.
Afternoon
Use a short out-and-back towards the Rail Trail if weather/daylight suit. The full 3.5-mile Goathland trail is optional only with a separately confirmed return, not a required walk-and-train circuit. Afternoon place guide
Travel
Northern Whitby to Grosmont and return, from the correct dated Esk Valley timetable.
Seasonal limits
Use the Northern N5 timetable valid to 12 December 2026; a new timetable starts 13 December. Check engineering changes.
If it does not work
If the trains leave no useful village visit, stay in Whitby rather than assume a heritage train replacement.
Rainy-day swap
Skip the wet trail and railway-yard approach. Use Whitby Museum when open, or village refreshments only if confirmed.
Dogs
Check train and station catering policies; lead dogs on roads and near livestock.
Accessibility
Check station assistance and platforms separately. NYMR's gentle trail description does not establish wheelchair or buggy access.

Day 5: Danby Lodge and Esk Valley

Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed
Morning
Take a dated Northern train to Danby. Verify station-to-Lodge walking approach separately; no November Moorsbus shuttle assumed. Morning place guide
Lunch
In the Wilde at Danby Lodge subject to its own opening; centre opening does not guarantee catering.
Afternoon
Choose Inspired by… gallery and Land of Iron at Lodge; optional grounds if conditions suit. Official centre opening is daily 2 November to 3 January 2027, 10.30am to 4pm, closed Christmas Eve/Day. Afternoon place guide
Travel
Northern Whitby to Danby and return. The station is not Danby Lodge; check the walking approach and opening.
Seasonal limits
Northern provides the train approach. Moorsbus 2026 has finished; no November shuttle or funded 2027 service is promised.
If it does not work
If the station-to-centre walk or return train does not fit, use a confirmed Grosmont train day or stay in Whitby.
Rainy-day swap
Choose the Inspired by gallery and Land of Iron display at Danby Lodge when open. If travel or opening fails, stay in Whitby.
Dogs
Confirm dogs in centre rooms and cafe separately; train carriage does not imply indoor attraction access.
Accessibility
Danby station is not the centre door. Check the walking approach and centre access information before choosing this day.

Day 6: Transfer to Helmsley

Partly insidePartly inside
Morning
Car-free: selected Whitby to Pickering 840, then 28 to Helmsley Square; check stop approach and dated connection before booking overnight transfer. Morning place guide
Lunch
Eat in Pickering during a genuine connection gap, or in Helmsley after arrival; do not force a tight meal connection.
Afternoon
Settle in and explore Helmsley market square, independent shops and lanes. If transfer cannot be made, remain in Whitby and replace both days 6 to 7, not just day 6. Afternoon place guide
Travel
Coastliner 840 Whitby to Pickering, then East Yorkshire 28 to Helmsley. Check actual journeys and stops with a 45-minute buffer. If it does not fit, remain in Whitby.
Seasonal limits
Service 28 is a regular operator corridor, not Moorsbus. Check the exact 840 and 28 arrivals, stop approach and final connection.
If it does not work
If the two-bus transfer does not work, keep your Whitby base and replace both final days with the coastal and Esk Valley alternatives.
Rainy-day swap
After the transfer, use Helmsley shops and a cafe rather than the outdoor garden. Do not add an unverified indoor attraction.
Dogs
Check both bus carriage policies, indoor lunch and the actual bedroom, not just the pub bar.
Accessibility
Check both bus operators' boarding arrangements and the stop-to-stop walk in Pickering. No seamless accessible interchange is assumed.

Day 7: Helmsley local day

Partly insidePartly inside
Morning
Helmsley Castle visit only with confirmed date-specific admission; otherwise explore town and river Rye surroundings. Morning place guide
Lunch
Helmsley café/restaurant, checking chosen opening.
Afternoon
Walled Garden only if actually open. For fit walkers and safe daylight, Park describes a three-mile Cleveland Way route to Rievaulx; returning on foot makes a substantially longer outing, not an assumed bus return. November car-free plan stays local; no M4 Sutton Bank. Afternoon place guide
Travel
Stay in Helmsley off-season. Sutton Bank is only an optional replacement if Moorsbus M4 outward and return are confirmed on the travel date. No winter connection is promised.
Seasonal limits
No November Moorsbus M4 service is promised. A seasonal Sutton Bank swap is possible only after a future operator timetable confirms both directions.
If it does not work
Remain in Helmsley off-season. For departure, select service 28 and your onward connection before leaving.
Rainy-day swap
Helmsley shops and indoor food, with current opening checked; the walled garden and escarpment are not wet-weather substitutes.
Dogs
Lead dogs around livestock and cliff edges; confirm castle, garden and indoor lunch policies separately.
Accessibility
Confirm castle and garden access directly. Sutton Bank's short viewpoint path does not make the Gormire descent accessible.

Visitor questions

Can I follow this holiday plan on any date?
No. Select actual outward and return journeys from the linked operator timetables before booking. NYMR and Moorsbus are seasonal. The plan includes off-season alternatives but does not promise winter heritage trains or a funded 2027 Moorsbus network.
Is this a guaranteed dog-friendly or accessible holiday?
No. Dog and access notes are specific to each day; unknown carriage, indoor food and accommodation policies must be confirmed directly. A short accessible viewpoint does not make a full walk or village step-free.

Sources and the limits of this plan

Place details link to the sourced town and attraction guides. Car parks reuse the shared records with their source links. Operator links are above each affected day. No new departure times, accommodation availability or unsupported cross-moor driving durations are supplied. The road allowances retain their existing October source check; check current traffic yourself.

Where to stay in the North York Moors

Self-catering cottages, village inns and farmhouse boltholes right across the moors, from the southern villages to the coast.
