A whole holiday
3-Day North York Moors Itinerary: Car-Free
By Jon Cosson · Updated 1 November 2026 · Checked
Park boundary status unconfirmedI keep these holiday days to one area at a time, with an overnight base, a wet-weather alternative and the travel checked separately from the attraction. Choose dates and opening first: this is a suggested sequence, not a booked connection or a promise that every venue is open.
Allow a 45-minute buffer for transfers and a slower day. Aim to finish outings by about 5pm in winter or 6pm in summer. Do not add a distant attraction to fill a gap.
Day 1: Pickering arrival
Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed- Morning
- Explore Market Place and the independent shops, traditional butchers and bakeries; keep arrival local. Morning place guide
- Lunch
- Use a Pickering café or bakery, checking chosen opening.
- Afternoon
- Visit Pickering Castle only if its date-specific opening is confirmed; otherwise continue the town exploration rather than add distant travel. Afternoon place guide

- Travel
- Malton to Pickering on Coastliner 840; check selected stops and the current timetable.
- Seasonal limits
- Choose the selected 840 journey; combined 840/843 displays do not mean every departure reaches Whitby.
- If it does not work
- If your arrival misses a useful bus, shorten the Pickering afternoon rather than add another transfer.
- Rainy-day swap
- Pickering parish church if open, then shops and a cafe; keep the arrival local rather than use an outdoor castle in heavy rain.
- Dogs
- Lead dogs on roads; check indoor cafe, castle and bedroom policies separately.
- Accessibility
- Town pavements and individual shop entrances need checking. The castle is not a universal step-free afternoon.
Day 2: Whitby; heritage railway optional
Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed- Morning
- Transfer to Whitby. Heritage train only on a published running date and a departure actually reaching Whitby; in November after 1st use a selected through 840 instead. Morning place guide
- Lunch
- Whitby fish-and-chips café or takeaway; specific opening not established.
- Afternoon
- Explore harbour, Swing Bridge and independent shops. The 199 steps/Abbey viewpoint are optional for those comfortable with steps, not a step-free core. Afternoon place guide

- Travel
- NYMR Pickering towards Whitby only on confirmed running days. Off-season use a selected Coastliner 840 direct to Whitby; a Goathland stop requires a later confirmed bus.
- Seasonal limits
- The published NYMR ordinary season ends 1 November 2026. No everyday November railway transfer after that date is promised.
- If it does not work
- Use a selected through Coastliner 840 to Whitby. A Goathland stop is optional only when a later bus to Whitby is confirmed; otherwise go direct.
- Rainy-day swap
- Whitby Museum on a confirmed opening day. It is closed Mondays; use shops and an indoor lunch that day instead.
- Dogs
- Check museum pet-dog policy and railway carriage conditions; no dog-friendly indoor swap is promised.
- Accessibility
- Saltergate's viewing platform is separate from the Horcum circuit. In Whitby, omit the 199 steps if unsuitable; check the museum's accessible entrance.
Day 3: Robin Hood’s Bay village
Park boundary status unconfirmedPark boundary status unconfirmed- Morning
- Start in upper village and descend the steep street only if everyone can climb back; explore lanes rather than promise a coastal through-walk. Morning place guide
- Lunch
- Choose from the officially evidenced cafés/restaurants; confirm specific opening.
- Afternoon
- Continue village exploration and return uphill before the selected return bus. Beach activity is not part of the unconditional plan. Afternoon place guide

- Whitby where-to-stay guide
- Travel
- Arriva X93/X94 Whitby to upper Robin Hood's Bay Thorpe Lane and return. Choose the actual return first.
- Seasonal limits
- Select the dated Arriva X93/X94 outward and return. Winter operation differs; no copied frequency or departure time is supplied.
- If it does not work
- Stay in Whitby if the actual bus return or boarding arrangements do not work.
- Rainy-day swap
- Replace the Bay descent with a Whitby Museum day when open; on Monday stay with town shops and indoor food.
- Dogs
- Lead dogs near cliff edges and village traffic; confirm bus carriage and chosen food venue.
- Accessibility
- Thorpe Lane is in the upper village. Lower Bay has a steep bank; remain above it if descending and climbing back is unsuitable.
Visitor questions
- Can I follow this holiday plan on any date?
- No. Select actual outward and return journeys from the linked operator timetables before booking. NYMR and Moorsbus are seasonal. The plan includes off-season alternatives but does not promise winter heritage trains or a funded 2027 Moorsbus network.
- Is this a guaranteed dog-friendly or accessible holiday?
- No. Dog and access notes are specific to each day; unknown carriage, indoor food and accommodation policies must be confirmed directly. A short accessible viewpoint does not make a full walk or village step-free.
Sources and the limits of this plan
Place details link to the sourced town and attraction guides. Car parks reuse the shared records with their source links. Operator links are above each affected day. No new departure times, accommodation availability or unsupported cross-moor driving durations are supplied. The road allowances retain their existing October source check; check current traffic yourself.
