Where to stay in Helmsley: holiday cottages, inns and practical tips
By Jon Cosson · Updated October 2026
Helmsley is a market town inside the North York Moors National Park, on the A170 at the western edge of the park. It suits people who want to walk out of the door onto the Cleveland Way, which starts here, visit Rievaulx Abbey and Sutton Bank, and come back to a Market Place full of food shops, pubs and restaurants. It is further from the coast and the southern moors than Pickering, so it suits a stay focused on the western side of the park.
This page covers which part of Helmsley to stay in, the kinds of accommodation in and around the town, and what to check before booking one of the Helmsley holiday cottages. This guide is independent: we book nothing, take no commission and carry no paid listings. Any business we name is described only from its own website, and we receive nothing for including it.
Which part of Helmsley to stay in
The Market Place is the centre of Helmsley, a square of old sandstone buildings with independent shops, cafés and restaurants on the lanes branching off it, and the Friday market. Several of the town's inns and hotels face onto it. Staying here puts you within a short walk of Helmsley Castle, the Walled Garden and the start of the Cleveland Way.
Streets leading off the square, such as Borogate and Bondgate, are a few minutes' walk from the Market Place. A cottage on one of these streets keeps the pubs and shops close while being a step away from the square itself and its market day bustle.
Outside the town, farm cottages and converted buildings in the surrounding countryside and nearby villages, such as Sproxton, give more space and gardens, and usually parking, but you will need to drive or walk in. Duncombe Park, with its gardens and parkland, is within easy reach of the town.
Kinds of accommodation in Helmsley
Helmsley has several inns and hotels, many of them on the Market Place, alongside self catering cottages in the town and in the countryside around it. Helmsley cottages are let by individual owners with their own websites, by small groups of farm cottages just outside the town and by national letting agencies.
For touring caravans and tents, see our camping and caravanning page for sites around Helmsley and across the park.
Helmsley holiday cottages: what to check before you book
Parking is worth checking for cottages in the centre. If a cottage has no space of its own, the town has two council car parks. The Cleveland Way car park (YO62 5AT) is the long stay car park, with about 156 spaces, open 24 hours, and both fast and rapid EV chargers. The Market Place car park (YO62 5BL) has about 83 spaces and is the short stay option. Charges apply every day from 9am to 6.30pm in both.
Ask about steps to the door and stairs inside older cottages if anyone in your group is less mobile, and ask whether a cottage in the centre has a space for unloading.
Dogs are welcome at a number of Helmsley's inns and some cottages, with limits on the number of dogs and which rooms they can use. Check each listing, and keep dogs on a lead or under close control on the moors and around wildlife.
Minimum stays and changeover days vary between owners, so check the booking terms before planning a short break.
When to book
The school summer holidays are the busiest time for cottages in Helmsley. The Friday market brings day visitors into the Market Place each week. If you plan to walk the Cleveland Way from its start in Helmsley, book the first night early for spring and summer, and check the town's own events listings for any dates you are considering.
Staying in Helmsley without a car
Helmsley has no railway station; the nearest are Malton and Thirsk, with a bus for the last part of the journey. Buses link Helmsley with Pickering and Scarborough, and Moorsbus runs seasonal summer services, but check current timetables before you travel. The North York Moors Cycleway passes through the town, and walkers can follow the Cleveland Way to Rievaulx Abbey or walk the ten miles in from Sutton Bank. See our page on getting around without a car.
