Buses to and from Whitby

By Jon Cosson · Updated 19 October 2026

Whitby is served by three main bus routes plus the Esk Valley railway. The buses to Whitby connect York, the moors and the coast; check the operators' live timetables before travelling.

Coastliner 840: Leeds and York to Whitby

Transdev's Coastliner 840 runs from Leeds through Tadcaster, York, Malton, Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale. It then crosses the moor via the Hole of Horcum and Goathland to Whitby. Not every journey runs the full route.

For a bus from York to Whitby, check the Transdev Coastliner live timetable. Our Pickering guide and North Yorkshire Moors Railway guide cover places along the way.

See the existing Coastliner access notice in the car-free guide for current diversion guidance.

X93: Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby and Middlesbrough

Arriva North East runs the X93 between Middlesbrough, Guisborough, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough. It is the bus from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby and the Whitby to Scarborough bus.

Check Arriva's live timetables for the X93. Read the Robin Hood's Bay guide for the village and the walk down to the shore.

X4: Whitby to Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Saltburn and Middlesbrough

Arriva North East runs the X4 and X4A between Whitby, Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Hinderwell, Loftus, Saltburn, Redcar and Middlesbrough. The National Park lists the X4/X4A for Staithes.

For the Whitby to Staithes bus, check the timetable for the nearest stop, as the bus keeps to the main road above the village. The Staithes guide explains the steep walk down. See also Runswick Bay and Sandsend, and check Arriva's live timetables for your destination.

By train: the Esk Valley line

Trains run between Middlesbrough and Whitby along the Esk Valley. They call at Grosmont, where the North Yorkshire Moors Railway meets the line.

Check the Esk Valley Railway timetable. Our car-free guide covers the line, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway guide covers the heritage railway.

Fares and the bus fare cap

The National Park promotes capped bus fares on these routes. Check its bus travel guidance for current details.
