Whitby parking: car parks, Park and Ride and Abbey parking

By Jon Cosson · Updated 1 November 2026 · Checked 1 November 2026

Whitby parking is split between harbour-side car parks, the West Cliff, Abbey Headland and a seasonal Park and Ride. Choose the side of town you need first, then check charging periods and return arrangements. Published capacities are not live vacancy counts.

The council also lists Marina Harbour Users separately; it is not treated here as a general visitor car park. Use the council's restrictions before choosing a space.

Park and Ride: routes, stops and season

The council publishes 450 spaces at the A171 and B1460 junction, YO21 1TL. Parking is free for bus users; bus fares are separate. P1 runs via West Cliff to the bus station, while P2 runs directly to the bus station. Only the site, West Cliff and bus station are listed as stops.

The published 2026 season is 29 March to 1 November, seven days a week. This is not a confirmed 2027 schedule. The site locks 15 minutes after the final bus; check your return before leaving the vehicle. Motorhomes are allowed during opening hours, but not caravans or overnight parking.

Parking for Whitby Abbey and the 199 Steps

Abbey Headland, Abbey Lane, YO22 4JT, has 431 spaces, six disabled bays and ten coach spaces. Council charges apply in season even for English Heritage members. Church Street is the existing town-side option for starting at the 199 Steps.

For the visit and accessible approach, read the Whitby Abbey guide and the 199 Steps guide. Driving to the headland does not make every part of the abbey step free.

Blue Badge parking and motorhomes

West Cliff has four disabled bays, Pavilion Drive two, Marina Front two, Church Street three and Abbey Headland six. Check destination access as well as choosing a bay.

West Cliff, Pavilion Top, Pavilion Drive, Marina Front, Marina Back, Endeavour Wharf and Church Street prohibit waiting by motor caravans from 11pm to 7am. Abbey Headland lists no motorhome spaces. All listed council parking places prohibit sleeping, camping and cooking. For an overnight stay, use the Whitby camping guide.

Charging seasons and quieter visits

West Cliff, Pavilion Top, Pavilion Drive and Abbey Headland publish charges from 9am to 6pm, 1 March to 31 October only. Do not assume that exemption applies to every harbour car park.

Have a second parking option, particularly on event days. No council-backed least-busy hour was found, so no guaranteed quiet arrival time is given.
