Filey
By Jon Cosson · Updated 2 November 2026 · Checked
Gateway (outside the park boundary)Filey is a traditional seaside town on the North Yorkshire coast, south of Scarborough and north of Bridlington, with a long sandy beach and the rocky headland of Filey Brigg. It sits outside the North York Moors National Park, and it is where the Cleveland Way ends.
Filey beach
National Trails describes Filey as a traditional seaside resort with a long sandy beach and a promenade, a place to paddle or sit on the sand at the end of a long walk. Our beaches guide compares it with the sands further north.
Filey Brigg and staying safe
Filey Brigg is a long, low headland running far out into Filey Bay. National Trails notes that it is capped with glacial clays and is a good place for watching seabirds and waders.
The Brigg needs care. RNLI Filey's water safety team asks anyone walking out on to it to check the tide times first and leave at least two hours before high tide, and warns that the rocky surface is always very slippery; its crews regularly rescue people cut off by the tide or injured in falls there. North Yorkshire Council's beach and cliff safety advice adds: beware of falling rocks and debris from the cliff top, do not walk at the foot of cliffs, do not climb them, keep dogs on leads on cliff tops and beware of being trapped by incoming tides. In an emergency on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
Parking
North Yorkshire Council's off-street parking order lists four pay car parks in Filey: Coble Landing, Country Park, Station Avenue and West Avenue. The council has been revising its tariffs, so we have not printed prices; check the machine or the RingGo app when you arrive.
Northern also runs a car park at Filey station, paid through RingGo; its current daily tariff is published on Northern's Filey station page.
Getting there by train and bus
Train. Filey station, on Station Approach, is served by Northern on the line between Hull and Scarborough. Northern gives an average journey of about 17 minutes to Scarborough and just over an hour to Hull.
Bus. East Yorkshire runs service 12, Bridlington to Scarborough via Hunmanby and Filey, and service 13, Bridlington to Scarborough via Primrose Valley and Filey. Check the operator timetable for the day and direction before you travel.
The end of the Cleveland Way
The Cleveland Way National Trail runs 109 miles (175 km) from Helmsley and ends on Filey Brigg. A stone sculpture on the Brigg marks the end of two National Trails, the Cleveland Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way from Hessle. The final stretch arrives along the cliffs from Scarborough.
National Trails also publishes an easy walk of just over four miles from John Street in the town centre, taking in the beach, the cliff top, the Brigg and a stretch of the Cleveland Way.
