Goathland to Grosmont Rail Trail

By Jon Cosson · Updated 1 November 2026 · Checked

Park boundary status unconfirmed

The Rail Trail links Goathland and Grosmont via Beck Hole along the original railway alignment. I would choose the return first: the 3.5-mile walk is straightforward to identify, but a heritage train is available only on its published operating days.

The walk at a glance

Distance
3.5 miles / 5.6 km, linearNational Park Goathland guide: 3.5 miles to Grosmont. Not the Grosmont to Whitby Esk Valley Walk.
Difficulty
Woodland paths and open countryside on the old railway alignment. NYMR calls it gentle; no formal access grade was verified.
Underfoot after rain
NYMR advises sturdy footwear, especially after wet weather.
Start & parking
Goathland National Park car park, Beck Hole Road; Goathland station and village; £4.65 single rate; nearest postcode YO22 5LX
Toilets
Goathland National Park car park, accessible toilet with RADAR key; Grosmont toilets at Front Street and Waterloo. Check opening before relying on them.
Public transport
Coastliner 840 to Goathland; return between Grosmont and Goathland by NYMR only on confirmed operating days. Northern serves Grosmont and Whitby, not Goathland. In winter select actual Northern and Coastliner journeys via Whitby with a 45-minute buffer, or choose a Whitby town day if the connection does not work.
Hazards
NYMR calls the walk gentle and recommends sturdy footwear in wet weather. This is not a formal buggy or wheelchair clearance. Supervise children at road crossings and check any dog carriage conditions separately. Check local signs for livestock, ground-nesting birds and forest work. Wet paths, mud and bracken can obscure footing; do not push through vegetation to make a shortcut.

How long is the Goathland to Grosmont Rail Trail?
The National Park gives 3.5 miles one way. It is not the separate 8-mile Grosmont to Whitby Esk Valley Walk. No official duration or total ascent was confirmed.
Can I use a train for the return in winter?
Do not assume NYMR ordinary trains run in winter. Northern serves Grosmont and Whitby, not Goathland. Choose actual Northern and Coastliner connections via Whitby, or use a different day if they do not fit.
Is the Rail Trail wheelchair accessible?
NYMR describes a gentle route and recommends sturdy footwear after rain. That is not a formal wheelchair-accessibility statement; full access was not confirmed.
