Danby and Danby Lodge Walks: Routes, Access and Parking
By Jon Cosson · Updated 2 November 2026 · Checked
Danby Lodge offers a short Crow Wood circuit and a booklet of five separate circular walks around Danby. I keep those choices distinct rather than inventing one combined route. The centre’s published opening dates, parking and dog restrictions matter when choosing a walk or arriving by train.
The walk at a glance
- Distance
- Not publishedThe official booklet has five separate circular routes of 2 to 4 miles. Crow Wood is described only as short; no measured Crow Wood or combined circuit distance verified.
- Difficulty
- Crow Wood is an officially described short, circular, easy-access woodland route. That description is not transferred to the five longer booklet walks.
- Start & parking
- Danby Lodge National Park Centre main car park, Lodge Lane; Danby Lodge for the Crow Wood circuit; £3.90 up to 2 hours, £6.20 over 2 hours. Checked against the National Park list on 2 November 2026; check current signs.; nearest postcode YO21 2NB
- Dogs
- Only assistance dogs are allowed in Crow Wood and the centre buildings. Staff can advise on alternative dog walks; a policy for each booklet route was not verified.
- Pushchairs
- Crow Wood is described as easy access; no detailed buggy assessment or whole-booklet clearance verified.
- Wheelchairs
- Crow Wood is described as easy access, but a detailed route assessment and wheelchair clearance for the longer walks were not verified.
- Toilets
- External toilets with baby changing; an outside accessible toilet near In the Wilde requires a RADAR key. Changing Places is inside the Centre; confirm facility opening.
- Public transport
- The National Park describes Danby station as a 20-minute approach along a minor road, with traffic to watch for. Its published NZ 717 084 grid reference is the station, not the Lodge start. Confirm outward and return Esk Valley trains. Moorsbus to the Lodge is April to September at weekends and public holidays, not a winter service.
- Hazards
- Traffic on the station-to-Lodge minor-road approach. The five booklet routes have no individually verified hazard assessment here; obtain the booklet and advice before setting out.
- Centre opening
- Daily 2 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, 10.30am to 4pm, excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. From 4 January to 7 February 2027: weekends only, 10.30am to 4pm. These are centre hours, not a guarantee of trail or cafe opening.
Opens the walk finder with this walk’s length and effort already set.

Current route and access check
Park boundary status unconfirmedFor the short Crow Wood option, start in the main Lodge car park and follow the woodland circuit towards the hide and screening area before completing the loop. For a longer walk, obtain Walks from Danby Lodge from the shop and choose one of its five circuits. Each is a separate 2-to-4-mile route; their lines and figures have not been combined or reconstructed.
Crow Wood is the official easy-access option, but no numeric gradient, duration, age threshold or full buggy assessment was verified. Longer booklet walks need their own terrain and suitability check. Ordinary pet dogs cannot use Crow Wood; ask staff about alternatives.
Route file and official map
No openly licensed GPX or permission to redistribute a track was verified. Use the linked official guidance or OS map; no walking geometry has been traced or invented.
