Yorkshire Lavender is a family-run lavender farm on a south-facing hillside on the western side of Terrington, in the Howardian Hills. Set in around 60 acres with views over the Vale of York, it combines lavender gardens, a plant nursery, a shop and a tea room, and it makes an easy pairing with Castle Howard or Nunnington Hall.

What you will see

In season the hillside is planted with lavender and herb varieties, and the gift shop sells products made from oil distilled from the farm's own crop. Families can try the lavender maze and the playground, and there is a picnic area if you bring your own lunch. The plant nursery and shop are a draw in their own right for gardeners. The farm also runs creative workshops through the year.

A short history

1994: the land at Terrington was bought and the farm founded. The first planting was ten lavender varieties, trialled for their ability to cope with Yorkshire winters.

2014: Country Life described about 100 lavender varieties, a sensory garden, a mirror pool and wildflower meadows.

2020: the farm stayed closed for most of the season, opening only its plant nursery on two Saturdays in July.

2026: the season ran from 1 April to 31 August.

Tips and timing

  • The farm does not publish bloom dates, so ring ahead if seeing the lavender in flower is the point of your trip.
  • The November wreath workshops are a reason to visit out of season.
