The rules around the table:

  • Kids Go Free: one child aged 4 to 15 travels free with each fare-paying adult on standard services; further children pay the child fare. Under 4s travel free on a lap. One carer travels free with a disabled visitor paying the full fare. There is no family ticket and no senior fare.
  • Booking online or by phone adds £1.50 per booking; there is no fee at the booking offices.
  • Book a Day Rover online more than four days ahead for 10 per cent off the base fare.
  • The Gift Aid fares add a donation to the charity, which runs the railway, and come with a thank-you voucher.
  • Members get 50 per cent off travel and their dogs and bikes go free. The twelve-month Travel Pass was withdrawn from 28 March 2026; tickets already bought are honoured on Red, Blue and Pink timetable services.
  • Changing the date costs £5 with 72 hours' notice.
  • Bikes go in the guard's van, £3 a day, two or three per train.
  • A One Stop Return is, for example, Goathland to Grosmont and back; Pickering to Goathland is two stops; Pickering to Grosmont is three. Pickering to Whitby is a four-station journey, so you need the Day Rover.

Shorter journeys

If you only want to ride part of the line, there are One Stop Singles and One Stop, Two Stop and Three Stop Returns, priced by the number of sections you travel. Popular journeys can be booked online, and others can be bought on the day at any station booking office or from the travelling ticket inspector on the train.

Online or on the day

Online and phone bookings carry a small booking fee per booking. There is no fee when you buy at a station booking office or on the train. Standard services do not have to be booked in advance, but special trains such as the Santa Express are sold in advance online.

Children, families and carers

There is no family ticket as such. Children aged 4 to 15 pay half the adult standard fare, and under-4s travel free with a fare-paying adult. In 2026 the railway also let one child aged 4 to 15 travel free with each fare-paying adult on standard services.

There is no senior concession. A disabled visitor's necessary companion or carer travels free on standard services when the disabled visitor pays full fare; the railway asks for proof such as a Nimbus Card, a National Disability Card or a PIP or Attendance Allowance letter. The NYMR does not list National Rail railcard discounts.

Dogs and bikes

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on standard services for a small charge per dog per day. They must be on a short lead and not on the seats.

Bikes travel in the guard's van for a charge per bike per day, but there is only room for two or three bikes on each train, so groups should contact the railway first.
