Check before you go

The museum has reported temporary closures in autumn 2026, including the Great Hall after storm damage, and some routes into the museum have changed while a new Central Hall linking the Great Hall and Station Hall is built. Check the museum's website on the day.

The museum car park

  • Where: on Leeman Road, a short walk from the entrances to both halls (YO26 4XJ).
  • Charge: Car parking costs £10 per day.
  • How to pay: pay inside the museum before you leave, and before the museum closes. Station Hall takes cards only.
  • When it fills: the museum says it can be full by 11am at weekends and in school holidays. It closes at 6.30pm.
  • Height limits: both tunnels on the way to the museum have height restrictions.
  • Blue Badge: spaces are in the main car park, about 200 metres from the Great Hall entrance and 140 metres from Station Hall, and are free; bring your badge to the welcome desk.
  • Electric cars: there are no charging points.
  • Coaches: they can drop off at the Great Hall entrance on Leeman Road, but there is no coach parking.

Walking from York station

The museum asks visitors to follow its own route map, because online maps may show routes that have closed.

  • Step-free: from the front of the station, turn left past the Milner Hotel, go along Station Rise to the Marble Arch pedestrian tunnel, then cross the road, turn left and follow the signs along Hudson Boulevard.
  • Quicker, with stairs: cross the footbridge over the platforms, leave by the rear exit and turn left onto Hudson Boulevard. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Road train, buses and park and ride

  • Road train: runs between the museum's Great Hall entrance and Duncombe Place near the Minster, about 15 minutes each way and roughly every 40 minutes. Fares are £5 for adults and £4 for children each way, paid to the guard. There are no trains from 2 to 4 November or from 24 to 26 December, and the last trip each way does not run in December and January.
  • Park and ride: the museum names route 59 from Poppleton Bar, which runs seven days a week. Parking at the site is free, and an adult return is £4.
  • Buses: the 10L, evenings only, and the 19, towards York only, stop near the museum.

Opening and entry

  • Hours: open daily 10am to 5pm, last admission 4.30pm; closed 24 to 26 December.
  • Entry: free, with booking recommended. Walk-up entry is available every day. Wonderlab is charged.
  • Access: all areas are step-free by lifts or ramps, and wheelchairs can be borrowed for free. There is no Changing Places toilet on site; the nearest is at York station.
