Shops and shopping in Malton

Shopping on market days

The town is at its busiest on Saturdays, when a street market fills the Market Place, and busier still on the second Saturday from March to November, when the Malton Monthly Food Market runs alongside the shops. Both markets, their hours and how they differ are set out on our Malton town guide. If you prefer a quiet browse of the independents, come midweek instead.

Independent shops

Kemps Bookshop & General Store on the Market Place is a lovely dog-friendly bookshop and gift store with a programme of events. Hare & Wilde on Market Street sells handmade homeware, pottery and candles, and Swallow & Sons on the same street is a well-regarded independent menswear and clothing shop. Plum on the Market Place does cards, gifts and jewellery; Hoppers of Malton covers stationery, art supplies, toys and sweets; and Bias on Finkle Street sells clothing and shoes. Art galleries, craft workshops and design studios are scattered through the town too.

Antiques

Malton is a real draw for antiques lovers, with antique and curiosity shops dotted through the town's historic buildings, the sort of browsing that fills an afternoon without any particular plan.

Food shopping

The reason Malton is Yorkshire's Food Capital is on the shelves: Derek Fox the butcher, The Deli of Malton, The Walled Garden Pantry, Brass Castle Brewery and the Talbot Yard producers, plus greengrocers, a fishmonger and wine and gin shops. Practical

The shops cluster around the circular Market Place and the streets off it: Wheelgate, Yorkersgate, Market Street and Finkle Street, all within a few minutes' walk. There are short- and long-stay car parks in town, and the train station is just across the river in Norton. Malton is also one of the UK's most dog-friendly towns, so plenty of shops will welcome a dog through the door.
